Meet with police chief and sheriff to discuss law enforcement interactions on certain high profile cases that were in the news such as
• Interaction with police and Pizza King owner (2021)
• Dismissal of police officer (2023)
• Investigation into the death of Kyla Red Bear (2023)
Sponsored a community forum Community Mental Health Issues and the Intersection of Law Enforcement Practices: A Discourse on May 17, 2021 and issued a report.
Held discussion on role of school resource officers
Held discussion on police handling of domestic abuse issues
Inquired about law enforcement involvement in transporting people to and from the Human Services Center in Yankton and drafted a letter of recommendation
Met with school board member to discuss the school’s bullying policy and made some recommendations
Met with law enforcement, participated in the vigil, and submitted letter to editor dealing with the death of Kyla Red Bear whose body was found in a wooded area south of Brookings in summer 2023
Had representation on the citizen’s community panel in selection of a new police chief in 2022.
Partnering with a SDSU researcher on conducting a survey of college students interactions with law enforcement. It is CLEAR’s goal to expand this survey to include Brookings community members.
